ICTP is the Institute of Polymer Science and Technology and it was founded in Madrid in 1947. ICTP is one of the 140 centres of CONSEJO SUPERIOR DE INVESTIGACIONES CIENTIFICAS (CSIC), which is the main Spanish public research organization under the Ministry of Education and Science. The objective of the ICTP is the scientific and technological advancement of polymeric materials through research and development, at the service of Spanish society. This objective is pursued through the following activities:

  • research projects and contracts
  • education and training of personnel
  • dissemination of scientific information
  • technical support

The Institute has a total of 166 members, of which 48 are permanent staff scientists, 15 are contracted researches, 40 are permanent auxiliary staff, 20 are contracted workers, and 43 are students (postgrads and postdocs). There are 7 research Departments in the Institute: Macromolecular Chemistry; Biomaterials; Chemistry & Technology of Elastomers; Physical Chemistry; Polymer Photochemistry; Polymer Physics & Engineering.

ICTP activities can be summarized in four main areas:

  • RESEARCH. During 2007 a total of 141 articles were published in scientific journals, and 91% of these in ISI international journals.
  • TRAINING. Throughout the 2008, 8 B.Sc. theses and 9 advanced studies diplomas were prepared at ICTP. Since 1990, the School counts on the collaboration of the plastics and rubber business associations, ANAIP and COFACO.
  • MODERN PLASTIC JOURNAL. On a monthly basis, the ICTP prepares and edits the technical commercial magazine Revista de Plásticos Modernos, in collaboration with FOCITEC. This organ, unique in its area, combines information and news from the plastics industry with themes of current importance, through research articles and reviews.
  • INFRASTRUCTURE. Structural characterization and Spectroscopy; Optical and morphological properties; Thermal properties; Physical and chemical properties; Processing techniques; Mechanical, optical, thermal and chemical testing, etc.

Activities in the “gender and research” field

Gender issues at CSIC have been approached in the last 10 years through some specific actions:

  • Formal constitution of the Advisory commission of the CSIC presidency “Women and Science” in 2002 for the study, pursuit and optimization of the scientific carrier of women in the CSIC. CSIC Commission. The Commission is currently lead by the President of CSIC, Prof. Dr. Rafael Rodrigo Montero (http://www.csic.es/mujerCiencia.do)
  • Deliver of the specific report: "Informe Mujeres Investigadoras 2009" (Report on research women 2009) with a complete description of the situation of women inside the CSICstructure and an analysis of the trends for gender issues inside CSIC.
  • Promotion of gender issues in national and European Projects coordinated and participated by CSIC: GOODFOOD, GOSPEL, NANOCMOS, NANOFUN-POLY (http://www.csic.es/mujerCienciaEnlaces.do)

The current gender situation regarding the presence of women in CSIC has been reported in 2009. During period 1993-2002, the number of women investigation professors (PI) grew from 12 to a 15%, the one of women scientific investigators (IC) from the 27 to 29%, whereas the one of women researchers (CT) did it from the 38 to 39%. The increase of PI that reaches 22% and that makes us be optimistic as far as the fixed objective: a 25% when finishing the 2010, in agreement with the objective of “Human Resources in I+D: women and marked science " in the Strategy of Lisbon, Barcelona and Luxembourg. The increase has also been significant with regard to the IC. Finally, CSIC have managed to surpass in 2009 the barrier of 40% with respect to the CT. By the negative side, the Area of Natural Resources shows a clear stagnation in the promotion investigation professors. In any case, CSIC emphasizes that they have obtained that the ratios of internal promotion are similar in men and women in the last 4 years.

Main tasks to be developed by the Institute of Polymer Science and Technology of the CSIC are

Coordinating partner of the WP4 “Definition and Implementation of Self-Tailored Action Plans”; participation in gender targeted organisational analysis (WP2), participation to the three Laboratories (WP3); definition and implementation of the self-tailored action plans.(WP4), participation in dissemination activities and transnational cooperation
